Dear CIBA Members,
Sadly, I am writing today to inform you of the dissolution of the Community Independent Business Alliance (CIBA).
In 2017 it became clear to the CIBA Board of Directors that the organization was not in good health. Falling revenues, the loss of critical staff support, poor member attendance at events, and insufficient Board member recruitment had all combined to create an unsustainable situation.
The Board formed a Task Force to consider all possible avenues of action including re-structuring CIBA as a stand-alone organization, combining forces with another business group, or shuttering the Alliance altogether. The group polled the membership to try to clarify what our members needed. The Task Force reached out to other local business organizations in a series of round-table discussions to learn that many
were struggling with similar issues, largely due to a changing business environment. The group brought it’s findings to the Board for careful
analysis and discussion. Unfortunately the Board was forced to conclude that CIBA could no longer operate on it’s own and combining with another, equally challenged small group was not a tenable option. The bad news is the Board decided to close CIBA down permanently.
The good news is that local independent businesses will continue to be represented. The CIBA Board voted to disburse our remaining funds to the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition, the co-sponsor of the “Buy Local First” campaign for the express purpose of continuing to support that
campaign. The BLF Planning Committee is still meeting regularly so you can expect to see this year’s Buy Local First Day happening as usual.
Also, the CIBA Board opened discussions with the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce to create a Committee for Independent Business that would report to the Chamber Board. I am pleased to report that the Chamber has agreed to host this committee so that independent businesses will continue to have representation. Membership on the committee will be open to independent businesses that are or become Chamber members.
Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in more information regarding this committee.
I want to thank you all for your support of CIBA over the years and I look forward to the opportunity to serve you as a member of the Chamber’s Independent Business Committee.
